I once knew a woman who got a perverse kick out of poking holes into all my ideas and dreams. I told her once I’d love to try racing in a triathlon. She said, “Yeah, but you’re not a good swimmer. How are you going to get around that?” That stumped me.
I mentioned how I’d love to take my family of 6 to Disneyworld. We’d make the most incredible memories! She agreed. But her next question was, “Yeah, but have you priced that out lately? How will you ever have the money for pay for that?” I didn’t book the trip.
In a fit of emotion I once told her how much I disliked my job and wanted to do something completely different. She reminded me gently, “Yeah, but this job is secure. How will you survive without it?” I stayed at my job.
You’re probably thinking one of two things: either that lady is my mother or the worst friend EVER! But you’re wrong.
That woman was me.
Our fears speak so rationally to us. They make so much sense and keep us safe. And they also keep us stuck, sick and struggling.
I finally decided (did you catch that?) I’d had enough of the ‘yeah buts.’ They took me nowhere inspiring or fun, and I wanted a new experience. So I trained for and raced that triathlon, and just did the back stroke during the swimming portion. I shut that door to the old job and am having the time of my life doing something I am passionate about: using SimplyHealed to bring people relief and healing from the past, and freedom and confidence to walk their highest path. And my family of 6 is going to Disneyworld in a few months!
It took two things to shut up the yeah buts: a decision and an action. Is it scary? Absolutely! Is it worth it? You bet your bottom dollar.

This is awesome Allyson, I love <3 your article, sometimes or most of the time our thoughts and self dialogues we hang around with, thank you. 🙂
Oh my, I was about to help you tell this woman off – to find the woman was you. Then I realized, I have been guilty in the past. Excellent piece Allyson.
I love the surprise of finding out the “yeah but” person was you….and each of us speaking negatively to ourselves. Look for and make good things happen, despite what it might look like.
Great article Allyson! Very clear message! Love it! 🙂
It’s what we all need to do. That’s why some people never get the results they want because the, ‘what if’, ‘but’, all get in the way. Thanks for sharing!
Wow. This is so well written. You got me there at hello Allyson. Thank you. Yes, this message resonates with me. Thank you for taking the time to share it with the world. 🙂
That’s true, Nate. If we don’t let those yeah buts get in the way, we’re unstoppable!
