Prosperity Hack #5: Head Games

Einstein said, “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”

I remember as an adult, telling my girlfriends, “I wish I had intuition. That would be so cool!” I was baffled when a friend told me they “just knew” the lot they picked to build their house on was the right lot. I couldn’t figure out how in the world they could “just know!”

That’s because my whole life I honored the servant of my reasoning mind, and forgot the sacred gift of my intuitive mind.

We’re taught to live in our head and ignore the nudges of our heart. And though our reasoning mind is very helpful to get things done, it’s not a very good guidance system. The reasoning mind is filled with fear and chatter, and being in your head constantly has a very high price tag when it comes to creating prosperity. Why? Because your reasoning mind doesn’t like the unknown. It wants you to stay safe and stay the same –even if your circumstances are horrible—because your mind knows how to survive right where you’re at, or where you’ve been, and no place else.

When you find yourself in your head with lack and fear, a great way to get back to prosperity is by using games. I’ll share a couple of my favorite.

“What’s working for me now?” When you find yourself headed in a downward spiral, stop that spiral by immediately listing what IS working in your life right now. This takes the focus off the lack and fear and within 60 seconds will lift your thoughts and mood, helping you feel more calm, supported and centered.

Take a Gratitude Walk—A 10 minute walk does wonders for you on every level: mental, physical and emotional! Make a game of it by naming something you’re grateful for in your life (past or present) with every step or every other step you take. For advanced gamers: name something you’re grateful for that hasn’t shown up in your life yet.

The Elevator Game—when mind chatter is overwhelming, imagine stepping into an elevator that goes from your head down to your heart. You’ll know you’ve reached the right “floor” because it’s quiet and peaceful here in the heart, not frantic and noisy like the head. If it’s still a bit cluttered, ask yourself, “Is this my heart or my head?” If it doesn’t feel peaceful, step back in the elevator and keep on riding!

Using this hack in your own life: Pick one of the games and play it! You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can turn yourself around by gamifying prosperity.

Prosperity Hack #4: Learning how to let go

Several years ago, when we lived with my in-laws while looking for a home to buy, I noticed that my mother-in-law kept giving candy to my young kids right before dinner time. And we all know what happens when children eat candy right before dinner. And I love my mother-in-law to pieces! But I also needed to set some boundaries about candy and mealtime.

When I asked her not to give the kids candy before dinner, she agreed. However, when the kids asked her for candy she told them, “I can’t. Your mom said I can’t give you candy ever again!”

We make up stories around our life, prosperity and relationships every single day. And most of the stories we tell ourselves don’t help us get more prosperous. As a matter of fact, the stories we hold onto (the ones that happened in the past, and the meaning we gave them), as well as the stories we create (like the story and meaning my mother-in-law attached to my request that the kids not have candy before dinner) will either work to move us forward or work to keep us stuck. But the great thing about it is that you can decide the part of the stories you keep and what meaning you attach to every experience!

When worry and fear have you in their grip, it means  you’ve shot yourself into the future and you’re trying to live there, using only the skills you have so far. You’re creating a story about the future that doesn’t support you creating prosperity. The future is really scary when you look at it that way. Bring yourself back to the moment by taking a deep breath and focusing on how you’re supported right now, in this moment.

When old resentments, regrets or guilt bubble up, your mind has taken you back to the past, and you’re holding on to the old stories that make you feel less than you truly are. When you find yourself there, take a deep breath, find the beautiful lessons in those experiences, and choose to forgive yourself and others, letting go of the stories of the past that don’t help you feel good in this moment.

Prosperity is created moment by moment. It’s not created in the future. It’s created now. So it’s crucial to keep yourself thinking in the ‘now’ moment as well.

Using this hack in your life:

When you find yourself reliving painful stories of your past, tell yourself “Everything happens for a reason and that reason is here to assist me.” Then deliberately find the good that came out of that experience. It might take a little bit of time and effort, but I promise there will always be good to be found. It’s a universal law. It’s your job to find the good. And that will help you let go of the pain of the past, while keeping the beautiful lessons and growth it gave you.

Prosperity Hack #3: Why Trying Hard Doesn’t Work

I had a client once who told me over and over again about how HARD she was trying, but nothing was changing. When I pointed out that there is no such thing as ‘try’, you either do it or you don’t, she changed the language from trying so hard to ‘working so hard.’ And yet still nothing was changing.

Do you ever feel like you’re trying (or working) SO HARD not to think about lack, but nothing is changing!

If you’re trying really hard to change your situation but nothing is working, take a deep breath and stop trying. If you’re going to build true, lasting prosperity, it requires you to let go of pushing so hard all the time. In fact, working and trying so hard may be the exact reason why nothing is working. Rather than striving and forcing prosperity, you bring prosperity through by being calm and relaxed, and directing your attention to it already being here.

There is a universal law called The Law of Reversed Effort. It states that the harder you try the less likely you are to succeed. Aldous Huxley said, “The harder we try with the conscious will to do something, the less we shall succeed. Proficiency and the results of proficiency come only to those who have learned the paradoxical art of doing and not doing, or combining relaxation with activity, of letting go as a person in order that the immanent and transcendent unknown quantity may take hold. We cannot make ourselves understand; the most we can do is to foster a state of mind, in which understanding may come to us.” (The Law of Reversed Effort)

When your desire and imagination are in conflict, the imagination will win.

Using this hack in your own life:

So, how do you stop trying so hard? When you’re at your wits end from working so hard, feeling frustrated, discouraged, overwhelmed and defeated, take a breath. Literally, take a deep, deep breath. The most effective way to influence your subconscious is when you’re in a relaxed, drowsy, sleepy state. Get yourself in a relaxed state by closing your eyes, breathing deep and just focusing on counting your breaths. After a few minutes you’ll feel yourself lighten and loosen up physically. When you’re feeling sleepy and drowsy, imagine what you want and how it feels to have it. Spend 5-10 minutes in this state, letting your desires flow into your subconscious mind instead of forcing them in. Trying so hard is an indication that you’re getting in your way and repelling prosperity, so stay calm in the moment, get yourself relaxed, and THEN go to work on your subconscious.

Prosperity Hack #2: What Inner Work Isn’t

The 5 Most Profound Prosperity Hacks I’ve learned the last 5 years : #2

I am of the firm belief (based on personal experience) that prosperity is an inside job. You can do all the outer work like getting the perfect job and so forth, but if you haven’t done the proper inner work, you won’t be able to hold prosperity for very long.

First, what inner work is NOT:

It’s not being upbeat and positive all the time, and at all costs. That’s like slapping lipstick on a pig: it’s still a pig, but it looks pretty. Or putting on a “happy face” when you feel like the world is crumbling around you.

Don’t get me wrong: positivity is a part of prosperous living. Expecting things to work out is a huge part of inner work. But if you’re saying one thing and feeling another, circumstances will arrange themselves to match what you’re feeling, not what you’re saying. Every. Single. Time.

So, if you want to create prosperity that will last, you must first become aware of what your dominant thoughts are, and what you feel most of the time. Thoughts and feelings unlock the door to prosperity. They also have the power to shut prosperity far, far away from you. They’re the secret weapons to your success.

Feelings are powerful indicators of what you’re thinking at any given moment. And you can trace feelings to thoughts, and thoughts to beliefs. So if you’re wondering why circumstances are playing out the way they are, be aware of your dominant thoughts and feelings for one day. See if those thoughts and feelings are a perfect match for what is playing out in your reality. (They will be.)

Inner work is all about cleaning out beliefs and thoughts that don’t help you create prosperity, and installing the beliefs and thoughts that DO. And that takes a whole lot more than happy thoughts!

Using this hack in your own life: If you’re feeling anxious, upset, or anything negative, instead of ignoring the feelings or pushing them away, go back to what you were thinking at the time you were feeling those emotions.

Emotions are always tied to thoughts. It’s important to know what thoughts are creating negative emotions, because you literally change your world by changing your thoughts. Negative emotions always come from negative, unsupportive thoughts, and once you’re aware of what those thoughts are, you can go to work to change them.

Prosperity Hack #3 will be revealed next week. I can hardly wait!

Prosperity Hack #1

The 5 Most Profound Prosperity Hacks I’ve learned the last 5 years

A business coach I once had said that as I grow and evolve, my business will grow and evolve right along with me. And she was right!

This past year, as I’ve stepped into my own authenticity with greater confidence, it’s part of my mission to help you stay grounded in how to really create prosperity, using sound principles of universal truth, from right where you are.

Living real life, creating real prosperity.

I’ve pondered about the greatest prosperity lessons I’ve learned in the last 5 years since I really began studying it, and for the next 5 weeks I want to share the 5 most profound “prosperity hacks” I’ve learned.

Prosperity Hack #1: Get out of your way!

Do you know what you want? Are you clear about what prosperity means to you, or is it a little vague and nebulous? If you’re not sure, it’s time to get sure!

Picture it. What does prosperity look like? Is it a slower paced life? Doing work that fills you with a sense of purpose? Laughing with your family? Easily paying all the bills? Taking fun vacations?

Get CLEAR on what prosperity looks like for you right now. But notice that I didn’t say it was a particular job or exactly where the vacation is. Don’t get so hung up on the form you want prosperity to take. You can laugh with your family in a number of different ways, can’t you? At a movie, over the dinner table, in the car, taking a walk, over the phone. If you demand that you ONLY laugh with your family around the dinner table, you immediately shut down infinite possibilities that God and the Universe will bring you to experience prosperity in relationships.

If the vacation can ONLY be in Maui for you to be considered prosperous, you cut yourself off from countless other locations that can make you feel even more prosperous than Maui would!

So, loosen up on the form, already! You can be super clear about what prosperity looks like without insisting that it look like something specific.

To help you get clear, write it down. That keeps your mind focused on what you want, instead of drifting off, which scatters your focus.

When the inevitable question of, “How can I ever reach that? I don’t even know what to do!” pops up, dismiss it from your mind IMMEDIATELY. You don’t care HOW right now; all you care about is what the end result of what prosperity feels like for you!

If you simply MUST ask how, do it strategically:

Once you’ve gotten clear on what it is you want, you may ask HOW as long as it’s asked this way: “How can I take one step closer to prosperity today? What is ONE thing I can do that will help me feel just a little more prosperous, and just for today?”
