Affirmations: Miracle Makers or Malarkey?

Talk to anyone who has tried them for a little while and nothing happened, and chances are they’ll tell you affirmations are nothing more than pie in the sky wishful thinking. And they would be right.

Talk to anyone who has thrown their heart behind affirmations and been consistent and diligent for any length of time, and they’ll tell you they absolutely changed their life for the better. And they too would be right.

So, what gives? Do affirmations only work for the rich or the highly gifted or the privileged? No. Affirmations work for those who believe they will work for them, and who fully immerse themselves in the experience.

Affirmations, by definition, are just declarations of the truth or the existence of something. You have positive affirmations (I am worthy and deserving of a great life) and negative affirmations (I am so fat.) Most people have an inner dialogue that’s just riddled with negative affirmations (I’m such an idiot, I’m so stupid, how could I do that?), and because they feel them as truth, that becomes their truth. I’m sure you grew up with a girl who was thin to everyone else but her, and all she could exclaim was how fat she was, right? That was her affirmation. That became her truth.

Affirmations don’t take long to do (a few minutes a day is plenty), and can have a huge impact on what you pull into your life experience.

Unfortunately, most people don’t feel worthy or deserving of the affirmations they’re stating, which is why those things don’t tend to come easily into their lives. Remember in my introductory video #3, where feeling poor trumps thinking rich all the time? That’s why active imagining is so important. When you can fully immerse yourself in imagining how you want your life to be by engaging all your senses–what does your ideal life look like, sound like, feel like, taste like, smell like?–you will find affirmations to be so much more  powerful and being pulled into your experience without struggle or frustration.

If you’ve tried active imagining before, did any of these thoughts creep in:

  • Like that’ll ever happen.
  • Yeah, right.
  • Who do you think you are?
  • Dream on, buddy.

Those thoughts are indicators that on some level you don’t feel like you’re worthy or deserving of the life you dream of. Before you start thinking again about how broken you are, take heart! Everyone has feelings of undeserving and unworthiness at times. The solution is here!

Suspend your disbelief for the 5 minutes you’re stating your affirmations, and let yourself imagine how it would feel if what you were saying were actually true! At first it will feel like you’re lying. That’s okay. Just pretend that it’s not a lie. Let go and imagine!

Embrace these declarations as if they are your present condition, and you will be amazed at how quickly those affirmations do present themselves in your physical experience. That’s when miracles happen. But remember, lasting change comes from the inside. That’s the way it has to be. But just because a rose hasn’t bloomed yet doesn’t make it any less of a rose. It just needs a little bit of time, water and sunshine.

Below are some affirmations surrounding heath, wealth, and personal power. If any of them jump out to you, add them to your active imagining or write them on a card you’ll see often during the day, and watch where they’ll lead you!
